Hey everyone! In a quiet ceremony in Carnesville on this past Monday night (May 15th, 2017), Gpa was awarded his 50 Year Award from the Boy Scouts of America. This is a National Award requiring active participation and registration with a Troop for FIFTY YEARS. Bear in mind that the BSA has only been around for 107 years.
Joining in 1948, Dad earned his Eagle badge with Troop 96, Perry, Ga. As his own boys came of age, he served as Cub Scout Pack Leader for Pack 42 in Carnesville, Ga (with MamaPat serving as Den Mother, btw). He and another stalwart, Warren Brown, took over the Webelos group for several years thereafter and account for my first camping memories associated with Scouting. With Billy Westbrook moving on, Dad assumed Scoutmaster Duties for Troop 42- after his own kids had left the troop. This is the part that always makes me proudest- with nominal help, for over a decade, he hung in there with some very sketchy kids that obviously needed him. He met with them every week, he took them camping in his vehicle, fed them with groceries he bought because they didn’t come with any, took them home afterwards because the parents were no-shows, kept them safe, taught them Merit Badges, pinned Eagle on more than a few, and essentially helped to raise a generation of young men in Carnesville.
Already an Eagle, he is also a member of the Order of the Arrow (the Beta Club of Scouts), a Woodbadge participant (the Beta Club of Scoutmasters), and was awarded the Silver Beaver for his impact on the entire Northeast Geogia Council. As a point of reference, the council gives maybe two of these out a year. As a Lion (which, btw, will be another 50 year anniv in ’22) he has ensured that the Troop was always funded and fully sponsored, a role he continues today. His two sons, and now two of his grandsons, are Eagles.
Quiet ceremony indeed. Thanks Dad. I love you, -Step
